As with all processes, sublimation comes with its own standard set of problems. Every problem, however, can be avoided. This can be achieved with the right approach and understanding. Even if you face one such problem, make that a learning experience.
Banding
These are characterized by missing ink lines in the printed documents. The most common reason for this is the clogged nozzles in the print head. This is due to ink drying over time. It happens to all kinds of ink, and not restricted to sublimation ink. If such an incidence occurs in print heads, then the ink flow will stop. The result is missing ink streaks on print.
Banding has less frequency of happening if you print out documents regularly. This means multiple times every week. The ink in such cases will not have any opportunity to dry. However, if there is no printing activity, this will result in a number of issues. It follows that the simplest way to tackle this is to run routinely small ink quantities through the heads. The printer's head cleaning function should be utilized in this regard. For premium printers, this is automatically done. Software programs are also available to do the needful. Other causes of banding include the printer getting exhausted of ink.
Moisture
Unwanted results will occur if moisture gets into the sublimation process. Since the heat press functions at 400 degrees, the moisture will be flashed to steam and will blow the ink away from the intended target. The list of problems due to moisture include color shifting, image bleeding, and uneven transfer of the solid filled areas. As per normal circumstances, moisture in minute amounts could collect in the transfer paper. It generally gets absorbed into the substrate directly at the time of pressing. It is vital that steps should be taken to minimize moisture introduction during the process.
To do this, the sublimation paper should be protected so that the moisture does not get absorbed. The preventive measure is to store paper in a dry place. It is a good idea to avoid using any Zip-top bags made of plastic as they trap moisture. In case, moisture gets in, set paper on press for few seconds. There is no need to press. The paper should be just exposed to the warmth. The press radiates heat and this will evaporate any remaining moisture. Butcher paper can also be utilized.
